The term Natural refers particularly to the biochemical structure of the hormones used in NHRT. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study was research done on the long term effects of two specific HRT products that are commonly available – Premarin® and Provera®. Premarin® is an estrogen hormone made from conjugated estrogens.

One of the conjugated estrogens in the product is Equine Estrogen i.e. derived from horses’ urine and its biochemical structure fits the estrogen that is used by horses. The name Premarin®, in fact, is known to be derived from Pregnant Mare’s Urine. Provera® is a synthesised hormone called Medroxyprogesterone Acetate. The biochemical structure of Medroxyprogesterone Acetate is also different to what the body is producing naturally.
An appealing reason to use NHRT is that it has a biochemical structure similar to that which the body produces naturally. Another consideration is NHRT is individually customised for each person to ensure that it suits that person's individual needs – it is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Every woman experiences menopause differently. Every woman has a unique way of dealing with hormones. And every woman has her own expectations of how she would like to feel on her Menopause Treatment. Further, most women want to eventually come off their treatment and stopping "cold turkey" is not an attractive option. By customising each individuals' treatment, the dose can be gradually reduced to make the phasing out process far more comfortable.
NHRT has the capacity to offer all of this and more.
